Vertigo, its causes, and symptoms of vertigo

Vertigo refers to a sensation of feeling off balance. In case the person has such dizzy spells, the person might also feel like he or she is spinning or that the world around him or she is spinning.

Causes

Peripheral vertigo, the most common type, is usually due to a problem with the balance mechanisms of one’s inner ear.

  • Vertigo has been acknowledged as a symptom of several different conditions.
  • Side effects of a few medications
  • Head injuries
  • Vestibular neuronitis (inflammation of vestibular nerve cells; this can be on account of viral infection)
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
  • Labyrinthitis is also considered to be inflammation within the inner ear
  • Excess alcohol
  • BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) may occur for no apparent reason, or it may also develop after:
  • An ear infection
  • Head injury
  • Ear surgery
  • Head injury
  • Prolonged bed rest·

Vertigo, its causes, and symptoms of vertigo

The risk factors:

Vertigo is often an account of an inner ear problem. A few common causes also are:

BPPV- These initials do stand for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. BPPV does tend to occur when tiny calcium particles (canaliths) do get dislodged from their normal location and also collect in one’s inner ear. The inner ear does send signals to the brain about the head as well as body movements that are relative to gravity. It does help keep a person balanced.

BPPV can indeed occur for no known reason and may be associated with age.

Meniere’s disease- This can occur due to an inner ear disorder that tends to occur due to the buildup of fluid and also due to changing pressure in the ear. It can indeed lead to episodes of vertigo causing ringing in the ears (tinnitus) along with hearing loss.

Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis- This is indeed an inner ear problem that is usually related to infection (usually viral). The infection does tend to cause inflammation in one’s inner ear around the nerves that are essential for helping the body sense balance

Less often vertigo linked with:

  • Head or neck injury
  • Certain medications cause ear damage
  • Brain problems such as stroke or perhaps a tumor
  • Migraine headaches

Symptoms of Vertigo

Vertigo often develops due to a change in the position of one’s head.

People with vertigo do describe it as feeling such as:

  • Spinning
  • Swaying
  • Tilting
  • Unbalanced
  • Pulled in one direction

Other symptoms that tend to accompany vertigo include:

  • Feeling nauseated
  • Abnormal or jerking eye movements (nystagmus)
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Sweating
  • Ringing in the ears or perhaps hearing loss

Symptoms can rather last a few minutes to a few hours or more and may also come and go.

Treatment for Vertigo

Treatment for vertigo depends on what is causing it. In several cases, vertigo does go away without any sort of treatment. Patients can visit the homeo clinic in Hyderabad to get treated for this health condition.

Vestibular rehabilitation

This does help strengthen the vestibular system. The function of the vestibular system is to send signals to one’s brain about the head as well as body movements relative to gravity.

Vestibular rehab can be recommended in case a person has recurrent bouts of vertigo. It does help train other senses to compensate for vertigo.

Canalith repositioning maneuvers- Focus is on a series of specific head and body movements for BPPV. The movements are done to move the calcium deposits out of the canal into an inner ear chamber so they can be absorbed by one’s body. A person is likely to have vertigo symptoms during the procedure as the canals do move.

A doctor or physical therapist can guide you.

Medicine- In a few cases, medication may be given to relieve symptoms such as nausea or motion sickness associated with vertigo.

Surgery- In a few cases, surgery may be needed for vertigo.
