The thyroid gland is the gland situated in front of the neck. The thyroid gland takes the shape of a butterfly with the two wings being represented by the left and right thyroid lobes connected by bridge called isthmus. The normal thyroid gland weighs 20-25gms.

The thyroid gland produces three hormones namely thyroxin (t4), triiodothyronine (t3), and calcitonin. Thyroid hormones (t3&t4) influence and speedup many metabolic processes in the body. They are essential for normal growth, mental development.  Sexual maturation. Absorption of fat, maintains blood pressure, body temperature and pulse rate. The hormone calcitonin plays a role in calcium homeostasis.

The thyroid gland is under the control of the pituitary gland, a small gland in the size of a peanut at the base or the brain. When the level of thyroid hormones (t3&t4) drops too low, the pituitary gland produces TSH which stimulates the thyroid gland to produce more hormones. Under the influence of TSH The thyroid will manufacture and secrete t3&t4.when the levels of t3&t4are raising in the blood, pituitary senses this and responds by decreasing its TSH production. One can imagine the thyroid gland as a furnace and pituitary, gland as the thermostat. The pituitary gland is again regulated by another gland known as the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is a part of the brain and produces thyroid releasing hormone (TRH) which tells the pituitary gland to stimulate the thyroid gland (releases). One might imagine the hypothalamus as the person who regulates the thermostat since it tells the pituitary gland at what level it should be set.

Thyroid gland gets mainly 2 types of disorders.
